Winter Driving Tips

Jan 19, 2018

With the weather closing in again we thought it would be a good opportunity to remind you of a tips when driving in difficult conditions.

A deterioration in claims experience on a company fleet can have a severe impact on premiums, which may be felt for a number of years in the future.  It is therefore imperative to pay closer attention than normal to your fleet risk management.

Here are some tips you may wish to consider:

Check your vehicle

It would be ideal to have vehicles serviced before winter, however this is not always practical.  Therefore ensure you check the vehicle over yourself in particular check:

  • Tyres - check the tread depth and that pressures are consistent with the manufacturers recommendations
  • Brakes - ensure the brakes are in good working order
  • Fluids - it is important to make sure that the fluid levels are topped up, particularly washer fluid.
  • Lights - these need to be clean and in full working order.

Plan your journey

Plan your journeys ahead taking into account the local and national weather forecasts.  It’s also important to make it clear to employees that the pressures of work do not override safety concerns.  Therefore consider whether a journey is necessary or whether your client would be happy with a telephone call, video conference or happy to postpone a meeting.

Be prepared for the conditions

It is important to adapt driving style to take greater care of the weather conditions, which affect stopping distances and increase skid risk. Avoid harsh braking and acceleration for the same reasons.

Overall ensure your employees remain safe on the roads and don’t take unnecessary risks.
